You can direct Pathagoras to automatically scan your documents for any bracketed variables immediately upon the display of the Instant Database screen. While it saves you a click of the Scan button, it is probably best not to activate (or keep activated) this feature once you have begun to accumulate client/customer records.

To tell Pathagoras to automatically scan your documents for any bracketed variables.

1.Display the Instant Daatabase screen (typically, press <Alt-D>.

2.Click the red Power Tools button.

3.Check the AutoScan check-box.

We recommend against use of the feature. A little 'work flow' lesson is in order. When you display the Instant Database screen without AutoScan, the program is waiting for a 'recall of Existing Records' request or a 'Scan' request. If you want an Existing Record, Pathagoras voids the screen of any existing content, recalls the record, and then scans the underlying document for new variables. The scan triggered by AutoScan intially scans the underlying document for no good reason if you intend to recall an Existing Record. And if the document is a big one with lots of variables, you will have wasted quite a few seconds. So our advice is not to use AutoScan unless you rarely or never save/recall IDB records.
