Take a look at these two setups. The one on the left is one created with Pathagoras variable ‘coding’. The one on the right is a ‘classic’ HotDocs, The FormTool and other documents containing fields that will link the document to a data source. (Right now, there is no linked source, but there is still a remnant link – that’s why you see John Doe and the pronouns ‘he’ and ‘him’ in the text at the right.

Now there is one ‘mistake’ in the left column. If you haven’t spotted it, it is the very last multiple choice variable (three lines from the bottom of the main paragraph. The choices should be ‘his/her’. So, how might you go about correcting that mistake? Well, in Pathagoras, you put your cursor on the ‘m’ in ‘him’ and change it to an ‘s’. How might you accomplish the same in a fielded document. Well, you might press Alt-F9 and reveal the content of the backstage coding. Here is what you would see.

Fields

When you save the document, it is permanently tied to the original database. (Close this and reopen. Because of the fields in the non-Pathagoras side are present, Word tries to link back to the source spreadsheet. (This never happens with a Pathagoras document.

How a variable is created:

Pathagoras

Other Programs

[CLIENT NAME]

{MERGEFIELD "Client Name" \*Upper}

[Client Name]

{MERGEFIELD "Client Name" \*Firstcap}

All the coding is visible and easy to understand.

If you have a new variable, with fielded programs, you have to go back into the database and add (or change the name and then add or change the linked fields. (And if you try to edit on the fly with the current document open, you cannot do it. The current document ties up the link. You have to exit the document before you can edit the spreadsheet. With that, you have lost your ‘spelling’ hints.)

With Pathagoras, no such requirement. Add new variables and Pathagoras will process them with no problem.

When you hit Alt-F9, notice how everything moves
