Are there any limits to the size of a document that Pathagoras can handle?
From a purely technical point of view, the answer is 'no.' If Word can load the document, Pathagoras can perform against it.
But from a performance point of view, there are some practical limitations.
•The 'ideal' size for a Pathagoras document is no more than 30 pages (about 15,000 words, single spaced).
•Our testing shows that if a document is greater than 30 pages in length, you will begin to see some noticeable delays in the processing of <<*Options/Optional/Repeat* . . .>> blocks and the replacement of variables. Noticeable doesn't mean 'slow'. It just means you will see some short pauses and screen flashes that shorter documents don't display. Of course, these delays are more than make up for by the fact that you still get a final product back in a very short amount of time.
•When you get above 80 pages (about 40,000 words), things might change. The time from start to finish will begin to be of concern. Pathagoras is still running at 'peak,' but other things beyond Pathagoras' control are happening. All of this is dependent upon the RAM (random access memory) your computer contains and the speed with which it operates
With very large documents, Word is managing your memory. When RAM is full, but another part of the document is not loaded, but needs to be, Word will shift content in and out from RAM to your HDD or SSD. (Writing to and from an SSD is much faster than to and from a HDD.) Once the proper section of the document is in active memory, Pathagoras will complete the task.
If you routinely work with very large documents, we suggest the following:
a. Break the document up into a couple of smaller ones. In most cases the 'document' is really a series of related documents all pulled together in a package. Pathagoras has tools that allow you to process multiple documents at one time, and processing those smaller documents back-to-back (but still with a single-button starter) may be faster that processing a huge document.
b. Go get a cup of coffee. Assuming no setup errors, Pathagoras will make it to the end. It may take 5 or 10 minutes, but it will get there.
c. Send the document to us. We are always working on methods to pre-analyze large documents to improve performance speed. Your document may set us on a path to even greater efficiency.
