Q. What does Pathagoras cost?
A. Click here for prices.
Q. Why are there only 10 books per library (or 12 SmartPaths per library, or 10 DropDown Lists)?
A. The number of books, SmartPaths and DropDown Lists are partly arbitrary, partly practical. Yes, we could have had a few more of each, but as a practical matter, there is a limited amount of space that any Word window has. We set the number of each element based on user patterns and 'averages' as they were reported to us. If you need more, write to us and we will reevaluate the numbers. Remember, you can have an unlimited number of Libraries (and therefore an unlimited number of books) and an unlimited number of Profiles (and therefore an unlimited number of SmartPaths). We know that such requires the operator to select a new library to get to the 11th book. We are studying alternative displays. Your input will help us in reaching a decision as to how we will proceed.
Q. How did you come up with the name ‘Pathagoras’ and what does it mean?
A. ‘Pathagoras’ is wordplay on the name of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras (and is pronounced the same, with the accent on the second syllable: Pa-THA-go-ras). Pythagoras was a 1st Century B.C. Greek philosopher best known for the famous mathematical theorem attributed to him. More importantly to this program, Pythagoras believed that the essence of all things is number, that all matter was essentially numerical, and that all relationships in the universe could be expressed numerically.
Pathagoras, the program, derives its name from this remarkable thinker. Its original function, as expressed in its PathSmart module, was to express complex and unwieldy DOS path names numerically. That ‘numbers-based’ philosophy is still the foundation upon which all subsequent versions of the program depend.
Q. How does PathSmart/SaveSmart (document management) differ from Document Assembly.
A. Simply put, PathSmart maps and manages directories and their contents to speed up saving new documents and retrieving existing ones. The goal of the document assembly modules is to create original documents quickly and accurately from existing text. Both modules tame the unwieldy DOS directory tree, but do so for different purposes.
See this link for a more detailed answer to this question.
Q. What/who is Pathagoras’ intended market?
A. Pathagoras is aimed at any word processor who is looking for an easy to use document assembly program. Perhaps the user has never tried document assembly, or is one who has tried one of the ‘high end’ products and gave up because it was too complex.
Pathagoras’ original design was much narrower in scope—to simplify disk navigation. For those who were tired of clicking up, down and across Window’s ‘tree structure’ of file organization to find our documents, we had a solution. Simply pair a path to a number. Thereafter, all navigation is simply done by reference to that number.
As the ‘by the numbers’ system became perfected, other uses became apparent. Document assembly by check sheet, instant recall of clauses directly from the work screen . . . the list of uses rapidly expanded. The scope of potential users likewise increased dramatically. Now, there is not a single user (whether novice, ‘typical’ or advanced) who will not find at least some of Pathagoras’ many features useful.
Q. I just don’t have the time to spend learning another program, or to set up a lot of (or even a few) documents. What does Pathagoras expect of my time?
A. As with many programs, that varies with the user and the purpose to which you put Pathagoras.
Preparing an entire system will take time. It is sometimes tedious to take a large collection of highly personalized documents on a topic and neuter ('Pathagorize') each one so as to create a complete system. But you will get back in time savings many times what you put into it. Just remember, you can move as quickly or as slowly as you wish in implementing (or not implementing) the many features that come with Pathagoras. Unlike many other document assembly programs, it is not an ‘all or nothing’ endeavor.
If you don't wish to spend any time setting up your systems, you can ask us to do it for you. And we will be happy to oblige. We do charge, but it is a reasonable one. See Non-technical Support.
Q. Who is the program's author?
A. I won't waste space in this manual (or ink, if you are printing it) with the details, but if you really want to know, you can read a bit about the author of Pathagoras (me) at www.pathagoras.com/AboutMe.htm.
