Setup

Unlike its competitors, there is practically no 'setup' with Pathagoras. After you have downloaded the program from site, Pathagoras will self install. There are no other steps you need to take in order to begin using the program. (Pathagoras is an add-in to Microsoft© Word. It loads when Word loads. It is always ready when you need it.)

Once installed, you can immediately begin using the program.

Want to set up simple variables in a document?

It couldn't be easier to do. All you have to do is put brackets around the word(s) you want to be the variable and give the word(s) a proper 'variable name.' Here is a very simple illustration:

Original text:

Our client's name is John Doe. He lives at 117 Main Street, Richmond, Virginia.

First markup

Our client's name is [John Doe]. [He] lives at [117 Main Street], [Richmond], [Virginia].

Final markup

Our client's name is [ClientName]. [He/She] lives at [Address1], [City], [State].

That is all there is to creating variables. No codes, no fields. Plain text. And not only that, but [He/She] is a fully functional, selectable multiple choice term. Pathagoras can handle up to 5 choices within brackets.

So, how does this work in real life? Recall a document you want to automate and put 4 or 5 bracketed variables following the above examples. Save the document. Now recall the document and press the key combination <Alt-S>. Follow the prompts and provide values for each bracketed variable that Pathagoras finds. Look what happens when Pathagoras finds a variable (with a slash between alternative terms) like [He/She]. Do you see the buttons that Pathagoras generates for you? Was that easy enough. (If you decide to save this document, make sure to use SaveSmart or at a minimum Word's 'SaveAs' option. We don't want you to overwrite your new form document.

If Document Management is your primary objective . . .

. . . the first thing you will wish to do is to set up a SmartPath or two so that you can quickly locate files and between your favorite folders. See Parts 1 and 2 of the Pathagoras Users' Guide for more instruction and guidance.

<<Try this Now>>: Click Pathagoras' 'Automatic Mapping' feature found on the Main Menu. (It's a green 'Beginners' button.) It will create for you (automatically) a profile based on the (up to 9) folders you last visited.

If Document Assembly is where you want to head first . . .

. . . try setting up your first glossary using the 'Instant Glossary' tool located in the Pathagoras drop-down menu. With Instant Glossary you start with a complete document (a will, a contract, a letter, etc.) that you want to break up into its component parts. Mark out each clause simply adding 'returns' (press the <Enter> key) when one clause ends and another begins. Pathagoras will break up the document at the marked locations and insert your new glossary into your current library of clauses.

<<Try this Now>>:

. . . set up a drop down list of the documents/terms in a favorite folder. Click the green beginners button on the main menu and select option #2. It only scratches the surface of what Pathagoras can do for you, but it will give you a sense of the power and flexibility of the program.
