FAQs-Installation and Upgrades

Q. If I upgrade to the full version of PathSmart from the demo, or from the full version of PathSmart to Pathagoras, will I lose any of my settings or path assignments?

     A. No.

Q. If I upgrade to a new version of Word, will I need to upgrade to a different version of Pathagoras?

     A. No.

Q. If I upgrade to Windows XP, will I also need to upgrade to a different version of Pathagoras?

     A. Not really. There are two versions of Pathagoras, one for Word97 and 2000 users, and another for Word XP and 2003. The differences are few.   Pathagoras takes advantage of some of the functions that Word XP/2003 allows that are not available in earlier versions, but there is no real functional different in the two versions.  Pathagoras should not enter into your “to upgrade to Word XP or 2003 or not” decision. If you do upgrade your Word version, a simple reinstall is all that is necessary, and you will not lose any of your current settings.

Q. I downloaded and ran 'Pathagoras Setup'. Everything appeared to install normally, but nothing shows up in my Word program.

     A. Two possible causes and solutions. First, you have downloaded, but not actually run the setup program. Pathagoras Setup.exe is a self-executing file which, in sequence, expands the shipped files, places them in appropriate places on your computer and then opens Word. If typically install screens did not appear, if you never were asked any questions about accepting license conditions, etc then Pathagoras Setup.exe never got started. Locate it where you saved it and double-click on it. Follow the prompts, and that should be it.

On a small number of installations, because of security setting in effect on your computer, the installation routine fully runs but fails Pathagoras is not registered and activated as a Word 'Add-in.' In such a situation, you have to manually activate pathagoras.dot to be recognized by Word as an add-in. This is a one time only process. It may involve one or two of the below steps:

     (1) While in Word, click 'Tools' (in Word's menu bar area) and then click 'Templates & Add-Ins'. Check the 'Pathagoras.dot' entry.

     (2) If, when you perform step (1) above, the 'Pathagoras.dot' entry does not even appear in the list of 'loaded' items, click the Add button (in the second section of the screen. Navigate to Word's global startup folder and locate Pathagoras.dot. Most likely the global startup folder is 'C:\Program File\Microsoft\Office1x\Startup\'. Select Pathagoras.dot. When it is placed in the list, be sure to check the box to its left.

Q. I installed Pathagoras Setup. Now when Word starts up, I get a "Visual Basic Error in AutoExec Module" error message. Why?

     A. Check to see if you have Adobe's "pdfmaker.dot" installed in your startup folder. Older versions of 'PDFMaker.dot'  in the same startup folder as 'Pathagoras.dot' causes this problem in Word2003 installations. Please update PDFMaker from the Adobe website or remove (or rename) PDFMaker.dot from Word's startup folder. If the problem persists, contact Pathagoras.

Q. Do I need to uninstall Pathagoras before installing a newer version?

     A. Absolutely not.

Q. Do I need to exit Word® before installing a newer version?

     A. No, and in fact it is probably better that you do not exit Word. Pathagoras can create the upgrade connection for you automatically. Click the Pathagoras dropdown menu.  Click the “Utilities/Settings” selection, and then the “Upgrades” tab.  Click the <Upgrade> button at the left and follow the prompts.

Q. I purchased a multi-license pack of Pathagoras. Are there special installation and upgrade instructions?

     A. Yes, and you should have received them when you received your order confirmation. But if not (or you misplaced them), here is the deal:

Pathagoras initially needs to be installed on each computer (remember, if you bought a 3 or 5 or 10, etc., pack, please install the program only on up to that number of computers. That is all the license allows).

To save a bit of downloading time from the Internet, you can place the Pathagoras Setup.exe file that you downloaded into a folder that is accessible to each computer in the network. Each workstation can run the install routine simply by double clicking on that single download. But it is important to remember that each workstation must separately install the program.

Once Pathagoras has been installed on each licensed workstation, you should set a Common Profiles Path ('CPP') and point each workstation on the network to that CPP. This is a once per machine process, but an essential one to take full advantage of the networking features that come with multi-license version of Pathagoras. Set and point to the CPP via “Pathagoras|Utilities/Settings|Network Tools.”)

After you have installed Pathagoras and created/pointed to the Common Profiles Path, future upgrades can be done quite easily and practically automatically.

    a. On just one of the networked stations, download the upgrade from the address provided in the Notice of Upgrade. Select 'Save' (to Desktop) and follow the prompts to install the upgrade on the selected workstation.  (For this one upgrade, be sure to choose ‘Yes’ to the question “Do you want to transfer the Upgrade files to the Common Profiles Path?”

    b. On all other workstations, activate the Utilities/Settings screen and click the 'Upgrades’ tab. Click the <Smart Install> button. Follow the prompts. The upgrade will occur automatically after that.

Q. How do I uninstall Pathagoras?

Pathagoras is designed to install and uninstall just like other Windows programs. Uninstall Pathagoras via the 'Add/Remove Programs' entry in Windows Control Panel. While this has not been a problem with the newer installer that Pathagoras uses to install/uninstall itself, the possibility exists that the program will not uninstall as expected. If such is the case, click here to be taken to the Uninstall Intructions page on this site.
