FAQs-Error Messages

Q. Word97 users: When I press the PathSmart or Document Assembly buttons I get a message “Compile Error in Module XX.” What’s up?

A. The most likely cause of this problem is a non-existent or unregistered dsofile. The dsofile is the only ‘external’ file required by Pathagoras for its proper and smooth operation. The dsofile.dll is a Microsoft office product, and therefore completely trustworthy. Link to the below page and click the download link. Everything is automatic.

This link will take you to the page that describes the action of the dsofile, and provide a link to download and install the file:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http%3A//support.microsoft.com

This link will take you directly to the download site:

Q. When I try to perform a filtered search in PathSmart, the program tells me that I do not have access to the directory. There are no limits on my computer regarding my access to any directories.  What causes this error?

A. These are Microsoft created problems that express themselves when Word97® is being run on a WindowsXP environment. I won’t take the ‘rap’ for this one (although I created my fair share of problems in other aspects of program development). Pathagoras just brings out the ‘best of the bugs’ by the nature of what it tries to do for you.

The “fix” is easy, but Microsoft has to provide it to you. Call Microsoft at 800-936-4900. Tell them you are running Word97 on an XP machine. Tell them that you are getting an error that says that you don’t have access to certain directories, and/or that you are getting “Runtime Error 5” when you try a wildcard search. Tell them also that you have a Q number and, when asked for the number, give them “Q291240.”  Microsoft will send you, via e-mail, a link to the file that will fix the problem. I am not authorized to send you the fix directly. I will vouch that it worked for me and all others who reported back to me.

Q. When I try to recall an Instant Database mask I occasionally get an Error Message 5 saying that the mask cannot be located. What’s up?

A. (Note: This problem has now been substantially resolved. The question is left on the FAQ site just in case a new bug is uncovered in this routine.) This is a know ‘bug’ with no known source.  When the error occurs, a large error message ‘block’ now appears with data that Pathagoras programmers need to determine the source of the problem. Kindly copy the message block and send it to errormessage@pathagoras.com.

Q. When I try to run my document assembly routine, I get an error message “File Not Found” and a screen that requires me to “End” the program. What’s up?

A. (Note: This problem has now been substantially resolved. The question is left on the FAQ site just in case a new bug is uncovered in this routine.) Some routines require that Pathagoras be able to access and write to certain folders. Sometimes your system administrator has restricted access to writing to those folders. When that is the case, something has to give, and it is the program in the form of a failure. The program reports which file (and folder) was attempted to be written. Ask your system administrator if restrictions apply. Also, report the error to errormessage@pathagoras.com so that we can determine if a more ‘universal’ folder can be used for that routine.

Q. I installed Pathagoras Setup. Now when Word starts up, I get a "Visual Basic Error in AutoExec Module" error message. Why?

A. Actually, repeated installs show this not to be a Pathagoras issue, but a PDFMaker.dot issue. It's just that Pathagoras.dot in the starup folder as PDFMaker.dot causes the problem to express itself.  It also seems to express itself only in Word2003 insallations. The solution is to either update PDFMaker from the Adobe website or remove (or rename) PDFMaker.dot from Word's startup folder.
