The main thing you want to keep in mind when upgrading is that Pathagoras 'owns' none of your files. It merely points to them.

99.9% of all issues that arise as a result of upgrading can be attributed to a simple failure to adjust a file or folder pointer.

Unless otherwise noted, the steps below should be performed regardless of whether you are upgrading or adding a new user. (It is assumed that the computer that is to receive Pathagoras already has a valid copy of Microsoft Word installed.):

o Copy the registry settings from the old computer onto either a thumb drive or to a file server that will be on-line and available when the new computer is put into service.

o If upgrading to a new computer, copy from the 'old computer' to the 'new' all folders which contain documents you regularly use with Pathagoras. We recommend that you keep them in the same relative location. This makes the transition easier. This is not, however, a 'requirement' and you can place the documents in any folder desired.

o If upgrading to a new computer, copy from the 'old computer' to the 'new' the administrative folders that are unique to Pathagoras. These are typically located in the folder called: "C:\program files\Pathagoras" We recommend that you copy the entire file 'intact' and place in into the same relative location on the new computer.

o Networked users: If upgrading to a new computer, and if the office maintains the Instant Database records on the server (or location other than your computer), you can ignore this step. (Exception: if have have moved your Instant Database (IDB) records to a location on your PC other than within the "C:\program files\Pathagoras" folder, you need to copy the IDB folder and place it in the same relative location on the new computer.)

o Non-networked users: If upgrading to a new computer, and if you have moved your Instant Database (IDB) records to a location on your PC other than within the "C:\program files\Pathagoras" folder, you need to copy the IDB folder and place it in the same relative location on the new computer.

o If have have moved your MultiChoice *Lists* to a location on your PC other than within the "C:\program files\Pathagoras" folder, you need to copy the MultiChoice *Lists* folder and place it in the same relative location on the new computer.

o If your MultiChoice *Lists* point to external databases, you need to make sure (1) that the external databases are stored on the new computer in the same relative locations as on the old computer OR (2) that you change the references with the MultiChoice *Lists* definitions to properly point to the external databases.

o To duplicate to the greatest extent possible the settings from the old computer, restore the registry settings copied in step 1 above.

o Install 'full license' version of Pathagoras to the new computer. (An upgrade will not work. You will receive error messages. Contact Pathagoras if you need to obtain a 'full license' version.) During installation, Pathagoras will overwrite only those settings which have not be set or created by the above steps.

o Check the pointers to your various books in your Libraries. Adjust if needed.

o Check the pointers to your Instant Database records. Adjust if needed.

o Check the pointers to your MultiChoice *Lists* files. Adjust if needed.

o Check the pointers within MultChoice *Lists* files to external databases. Adjust if needed.

o Recreate your DropDown Lists.

With all settings checked and confirmed, you should be ready to roll.
